For Those Who Wish to Improve

I know there have been a thousand articles and books about leadership.  Each of them are good and yet it seems each leaves something to be desired.  There are so many things that make up a good leader that we often overlook many of the KEY traits that make up one.  I have seen leaders from one area attempt to “make it” in another and fail miserably.  They may BE a good leader out of place.

Billy Gillespie was a huge success as a coach in the Southwest.  However, he failed miserably when he got to Kentucky as a result of a lack of competence.  Not as a basketball coach, however, he lacked competence for the media and the Kentucky experience and what basketball means in Kentucky (literally everything).

Steve Spurrier was a tremendous college coach but failed in the pros.

Carly Fiorina was a huge success until she got to HP.

There are many examples of leaders who were great in one area, but who failed miserably in others.  This does NOT make them any less of a person, but it does point out that there are definitely some keys to leadership.  Also, there are areas where you can lead and others that you should avoid.  While we cannot define that for you, we can give you some help that should be enough to help you avoid areas that could be catastophic for your career or business.

We will explore these areas over the coming months one at a time.  Also, we may jump around and NOT necessarily tackle them in any defined order.  However, we have organized them here for your review.

  1. Vision
  2. Congruence
  3. Self Defined
  4. Focused on income production activities
  5. Executer
  6. Be a self improver
  7. Be a mastermind organizer
  8. Humble
  9. Belief
  10. Project based results
  11. Trust
  12. Transparency
  13. Desire
  14. Wisdom
  15. Clear and Crisp Communication
  16. Competent
  17. Motivational/Inspirational
  18. Integrity
  19. A great listener
  20. Assess
  21. Servant Leader
  22. Follow-through
  23. Encourager
  24. Energetic
  25. Determination

These areas may not be perfected in a quality leader, but he or she will use each of them to create a successful group/entity.

As always, we enjoy and solicit your comments as we explore these points.

I remember telling my son, "Make good choices."

I am sure many of you have said that in some form to your child or grand child at some point in time.  Choices are what make us who we are and what teach us what and what not to do.

The great thing with regard to that is this, you can change your choices right now.  Your future is your choices from here on out.

You get to decide what you do from here on out.

The point here is that you can completely define what you want to be from your choices moving forward. So, here is your challenge:

Start today defining who you WANT to be and making choices that will direct your path toward that ultimate goal.

I want to know who is changing their direction today.  Comments are welcome.

Well, I have to say that I am pretty lucky today.  I almost t-boned a Questar Gas truck (he ran a red light).

But, it reminded me to not always be in a rush.  Now, I was in a hurry to help someone who had double scheduled.  So, I had to cover for them.  But, I could have been some road kill.

Questar Gas

So, my counsel today is relax.  Take in your surroundings and be aware.  Don’t be in such a rush, you may find that the life you save is your own.
