Certainly, the method of how and when you communicate is important.  As we go through the series on communication, we will be looking closely at each option and the preferred selection of communication.

Now, I know that most of you know inherently all of these points.  However, you may learn some new things by reading each area closely.

Communicating is so important in today’s world.  Marketing, networking, customer relationship management, politics, religion, peace (or the lack thereof) and personal relationships can all prosper or suffer as a result of your communication skill.

In looking at the method of communication the first method is face-to-face communication.  Face-to-face communication allows for the two parties to see and  experience the entire communication, method, content, tone, non-verbal, distance, barriers and timing.  It is the preferred method of communication in every sense.  It is more personal and allows for a greater

array of flexibility in the communication

There are four type of face-to-face communications that can be employed.  One-to one; meaning that you are one person speaking to only one other person.  This allows for the most intimacy and persuasion.  One-to-many; this method allows for some intimacy, but is less effective that one-to-one.  Many seminar speakers develop a loyal following with their communication style and connection abilities.  Many-to-many is less effective and harder to control the style and connection desires.  This is the conference room, board meeting or sales scenario.  There can be too many chiefs and not enough indians in this situation.  The last and least effective is many-to-one.  This is the advertising scenario, where many people are trying to tell or show one person some situation.  It can be overwhelming to the “one” party.

The second method is phone.  It is less personal and less intimate, but it is still very important.  It is also much better than not communicating or waiting an inordinate amount of time prior to communicating.  The phone has an advantage in that it can happen whether you are at the office, home, golf course or shopping.  It allows total freedom and can hide body language and cut timing significantly.

A new and exciting method of communication is a webinar or web meeting.  These allow for a lot of flexibility.  You can use video conferencing, presentations, white-boarding and text chatting all within a secure encapsulated environment.  Additionally, the organizer can control the environment by allowing or not allowing each function.  It is a very good environment for pitches and certain types of meeting.  I can create the effect of loyalty if the correct persuasion is used in the situation.

A similar method, but much less controlled is video-conferencing.  With video conferencing, whether used through telecommunication lines or the web is the prototypical example of a many-to-many scenario.  This method of communication allows us to see much of the body language and get the overall “feel” for the communication.  It has not caught on like experts initially thought that it would.

e-Mail has become a preferred method of communication for many.  It takes out mood, body language, emotions (if desired).  It will continue to be an easy way to keep in contact and exchange details, but it should not take the place of personalized contact.

Instant messaging allows for complete conversations over the computer.  For speed and  deliverability, this method can be very effective.

Texting from device to device has become prolific.  Anybody who has a teenager will understand this.  it is a way to communicate without disrupting the flow of the day.  Short concise methods may be communicated directly and instantly.

Marketing, although less personal, can be very effective, it can happen in all these methods as well as T.V., radio, print, press releases, billboards, etc.  It is a one-to-many method that can create some loyalty and definitely helps in branding.

Whatever method you use to communicate effectively, be sure that you have scripted your message and thought about your delivery and expected results and challenges.  Choosing the method of your communications is something you as a persuader get to choose.  You decide how you want to structure and deliver all your messages.  Therefore, determine your message and deliver it with just the right spices to create that mouth-watering, I-can’t-wait-until-I-get-some persuasion and pick the method that best delivers that result and support it with other methods and meat and you will master the effective communications series.

There is a simple misunderstanding about money, capabilities and how to accumulate and keep wealth. This misunderstanding has been propagated by our public school system. Our public school system teaches:

  • Study Hard
  • Get good grades
  • Get a good education
  • Get a good job
  • Retire after 40 years of building someone else’s dream
  • Live on 60% of what you couldn’t live on before

We spend 14 to 24 years learning from people who do not make a solid living how to make a solid living. We learn in a school system that does NOT teach personal financial acumen or how to get along with our fellow man.

Now, I love teachers! If they paid teachers what they are truly worth, I would be one. And, I will probably retire from public life to be a teacher. What I am saying is that it is time for us to learn how to succeed.

In Great Britain, people take month long vacations and save 38% per capita last time I looked.  That is because they teach it in their school system.  Each of us would do well to learn from their model.

These two diagrams will help show you how to start thinking of your assets and how to increase them.

First, we want to talk about the four quadrants of wealth. The first quadrant is where we all start. In it are the basic elements we as humans have.

    The Four Quadrants

    The Four Quadrants

  • Cash
  • Credit
  • Capabilities
  • Career

Most people take those four elements and trade them for a lifestyle that is NOT satisfying and is not what they can achieve.

They trade time for money.

The better model is to trade those four elements for assets.  Those assets will generate a cash flow and from the cashflow, you can buy your lifestyle.

When you set your goals, make sure you build in delayed gratification until you reach the designated cash flow that will create the life style that has been set forth in your goals.

What are considered assets you ask?  Rental properties, software, music, artwork, businesses, books and any idea or other business model that produces cash on a consistent and residual method.

If you spend your time and your four elements accumulating the means to acquire assets instead of lifestyle, you will create for yourself a lifestyle that many dream about.

Why is it that most people do not reach their dreams to the tune of 97% DO NOT retire financially free.  There are two fundamental reasons:

#1.  They are not doing what they love and therefore, lack the passion necessary to achieve what they want.
#2. They do not make enough income in their life to take TIME to think and create the assets to provide the dollars necessary.

These two reasons are not related.  If you love what you do you will have endless energy to accomplish those things you want to accomplish.

Most of us are not necessarily doing what we love.  So, we must use number two as the basis for how to create success.

Therefore, the key to getting the TIME necessary to create a plan to succeed is having your income exceed your expenses.  There are two ways to achieve this.  Either one will work for our purposes:

#1.  Increase your income to exceed your expenses.
#2. Lower your expenses beneath your income.

Why would we want to do this?  To get the freedom to use the time to think.  Most people never have had the time to think about their future and how to fund it or whatever you want to accomplish.

This TIME allows you to create the plan that you have always wanted to achieve those things that you want.  The uber wealthy have always known this.  The wealthy teach their children this process.  The diagram below shows us this ceiling that I call the “Wealth Ceiling”:

The Wealth Ceiling

The Wealth Ceiling

The yellow band represents the Wealth Ceiling.  As a result, people tend to take the easiest route.  If it is hard to acquire assets, then most people might take the easy route and trade their cash, credit, capabilities and career for their lifestyle, which 97% of people have chosen to do.  It takes discipline, delayed gratification and desire to accomplish this.

For you to break this cycle you must either raise your income or lower your expenses to give you the freedom to use TIME to think.  I suggest you spend some time thinking about how you can create the TIME to think about your future and your plan for life.

If you want to succeed at the highest levels of almost any organization or career, you must employ leverage.  Understanding how leverage works within a team is the ultimate knowledge.  Building that team is critical to creating an atmosphere of winning.  While some sports are one-on-one, most involve a team.  You must employ the greatest skills of motivating others to their highest potential if you want to succeed as a team.  Michael Jordan, largely considered the greatest basketball player of our age, could not have succeeded without players and supporting staff around him that let him shine without requiring him to shoulder the entire load.  He played for the Chicago Bulls.  And, while the Bulls made the playoffs a few times with him carrying the entire load, they could not get past the “teams” that were in their way until they acquired the correct supporting staff.  When they did, they ran off 3 NBA Championships in a row.

The mental note to make here is that “Team work wins over Individuality every time.”

With that in mind, lets take a quick look at the parts of team work and how they fit into the puzzle.  This will be a quick overview with an in-depth look at each in their own section.

Team Goals is the starting point for any true team work to begin.  You must have a solid game plan that all team members can refer back to so that there is little if any ambiguity as to how they fit into the puzzle as well as how the team will accomplish the ultimate goals.

An underlying and often overlooked part of this is a common value-set.  The team needs to agree on the values that they will operate under.

The most obvious part of team-work is cooperation.  Cooperation is mandatory to achieve the highest levels of team work.

One player/team member cannot be on a different page as the rest of the team or the synchronization of the team loses its effectiveness.  The University of Kentucky Cheerleading team is consistently in the top 5 of the National Championships and has won multiple times.  If one of the cheerleaders is off, the whole team gets downgraded seriously.  Therefore, in this type of team, you truly are only as strong as your weakest link.

The USAF Thunderbirds are the epitome of trust.  If one of those team members loses focus during their flying exercises, someone loses a life.  Trust is not given in most cases, it is earned.  That is a little of a paradox for most teams as a new member needs to have the trust to accomplish what he or she needs to, but the teams still needs to operate.  This forces any good team to be together for some amount of time.  You can connect without establishing trust initially.

Finishing the job is one of the most important part of the team.  Completion is a skill that is learned one-on-one and transferred to a team. So, completion is a big part of building team work.

The quality of players you bring to the table also makes a huge difference in whether you win or lose in the situation.

One of the frustrating parts of some teams is wrong job assignments.  You must assign the right people to the right job.  You don’t send the introvert to the social mixer or the point guard to do all the rebounding.  Although they may accomplish some of the task a mis-assigned team member will not flourish in the wrong setting.
Lack of leadership is a huge issue with progressing as a team.  There needs to be vision and direction to accomplish all the things that we want to as a team.  The right leadership provides that as part of the process.

Another critical issue with team work is a lack of followers.  If everyone is trying to lead, you will be going in all directions instead of one direction.

Motivating the team properly is always a key component to team work.  Every team and individual on the team will take different motivation.  The leader who can figure out that motivation will master the end result.

And finally you must operate the team with integrity.  You may change paths or goals or any other thing, but you MUST operate with integrity or the team will lose conidence and flounder.

As we operate our teams, we must maintain these key elements to ensure that the team stays together and plays together well.  If you are a current team member, take these elements back to your team to help them succeed.

As always, your comments and thoughts are desired here.
