Mt. Everest

It looms large in many mountain climbers minds and hearts. Very few have finished the climb and the list is elite company for sure.

It is a massive barrier to go over or around.

Communication is so important to success. It is one of the biggest barriers we have in business and personal success.

There are seven keys to communication. Over the coming weeks we will look at those “keys”.

But, here they are in short form.

  • Method of Communication
  • Content of Communication
  • Tone of Communication
  • Non-Verbal Communication
  • Distance of Communication
  • Communication Barriers
  • Time of Communication

Some of these need more time and depth to cover. Others will not need as much. As a result, some will be combined and some will be expanded.

These areas have the potential to kill deals, ruin relationships and just generally cause grief. Make sure you execute on each of them well to create true attraction.

To effectively communicate you must master these 7 Keys.

Follow this in the coming weeks and comment often.  I like lots of comments.

Sometimes we don’t understand the value of the things we have or don’t.  Here are some concrete examples.

To realize
The value of a sister/brother
Ask someone
Who doesn’t have one.

To realize
The value of ten years:
Ask a newly
Divorced couple.

To realize
The value of four years:
Ask a graduate.

To realize
The value of one year:
Ask a student who
Has failed a final exam.

To realize
The value of nine months:
Ask a mother who gave birth to a stillborn.

To realize
The value of one month:
Ask a mother
Who has given birth to
A premature baby.

To realize
The value of one week:
Ask an editor of a weekly newspaper.

To realize
The value of one minute:
Ask a person
Who has missed the train, bus or plane.

To realize
The value of one-second:
Ask a person
Who has survived an accident.

Time waits for no one.
Treasure every moment you have.
You will treasure it even more when
You can share it with someone special.

To realize
The value of a friend or family member:
LOSE ONE.

Other examples needed.  Leave me a comment, so that I have many!

It is by acts and not by ideas that people live. — Anatole France – French novelist (1844 – 1924)

Your actions speak so loud, I cannot hear your words

I hear not what you say, but the volume of your actions cannot be supressed

All of these are good quotations of what is probably the biggest problem in our society.  People or companies that say one thing and then DO another.

We have all been around those who are this way.  They are frustrating to say the least.  And,  I would venture to say that we have each done it once or twice.  However, consistently saying one thing and doing another is a serious issue and we need to separate ourselves with those who continue to do things opposite to the words that they speak.

Dealing with these individuals is, has and always will be,  a difficult situation.  Therefore we need to take steps to identify those who CANNOT and will not make a positive change.

Here are the rules:

  • Make sure your actions match your words
  • Research the past of any person/company that you are counting on for results.
  • Before you put out money, check with others who have dealt with this entity.
  • Before you invest emotionally, check out the stability of who you are dealing with.
  • Always measure the words of an individual with the actions that they take.

In this module I am not saying become skeptical.  However, I do believe the cost of research up front is so minimal compared to the expense of the challenges and issues over the long haul.

I have talked about Time Wasters in the past.  A majority of those that are incongruent between their words and actions fall into this category of Time Wasters.  However, keep in mind that your time, emotions, capabilities and path are very valuable.  Don’t give them away or sell them too cheap, especially to those who are incongruent.

Make sure you are congruent and your results will match your effort and plan.

I invite lots of comments on this post.  Wow, I can imagine the maelstrom already.

We cannot rise higher than our thought of ourselves. — Orison Swett Marden

After much thought, deliberation and real pain, I am doing an entire post on this single issue.

I have spent many hours with people who have been unable to build esteem in their lives for themselves and those around them.  It is so important that you have a positive view of yourself.

Psychologists tell us that most abuse is a result of low esteem.  Both the abuser and the victim have certain responsibility in the situation.  We will not cover that today.

What we will cover is how to build esteem in you and those around you.  There are certain steps you can take to ensure that you build that confidence and esteem in your circle of influence.

Terrance Real, a psychiatrist at Harvard, defines self esteem in this way: “It is the capacity to cherish oneself in the face of one’s own imperfections, not because of what one has done or what one can do.”

Self Esteem

Self Esteem

I love this picture.  Look at it closely.  It truly matters more what you think of yourself than what any body else think at all

During my life a number of my friends have taken their lives.  They obviously did not feel that their life was worth more than their current struggles.  They did not know how to build their own esteem.

Here I have included some concrete ways to build esteem:

  • Create a daily affirmation of who and what you are and want to become and say it out loud, daily.
  • Determine your values and who you really are.
  • Write your goals out!  You have a purpose in life.  Make sure YOU know it.
  • Find people who believe what you believe and establish relationships with them.

One of the most important principles to remember is that self esteem is never built at the expense of others.  If you are tearing someone down to build another, you are forfeiting your own self esteem.

As you build the picture of who you are, you will be able to define what you should do and who you will become.

Today, I see the potential in all of you.  I want you to comment on you, your own potential and other self esteem thoughts.

Be who YOU are.

There have been many arguments over the years with regards to the differences in the female male brains and how the male vs female interaction is always struggling to understand each other.

I have struggled to define the differences and do a good job of explaning it.  So, I was forwarded this example of it and I have to say, it is pretty darn close.

Much closer than I could ever get.  So, with that in mind.  Here it is!!!

Men vs Women Brain

Wow, isn’t that really the answer?  Now that we know the wiring.  Someone help me figure out what to do with that great knowledge about female male brains?

Comments desired more than ever on this one?

One of my friends, Mike Ray is going through withdrawal.  He is on a project he is calling reclaiming my name on google.  This project is a project that each of us should endeavor to do.  Securing your name on google is very important.

One of the things that many teenagers HATE is to be used.  There are many people around us that are users.  Those are the people that suck you dry and give you nothing in return.  Well, it has become time for you and I to turn the tables on those around you that are users.

Leverage is a fundamental key in business.  You can leverage OPT (Other People’s Time), OPE (Other People’s Efforts), OPM (Other People’s Money), OPI (Other People’s Ideas) and OPA (Other People’s Authority).  Use leverage in every way you can to increase your business and influence.

In the old world, one of the most critical pieces of hard ware was the catapult.  It was the ultimate tool for creating fear and dread in the opposition.  It operates on the concept of leverage.  Using very little effort, it can create massive fear and advantage.

Here is an example of a catapult.  Staying with the “fun” atmosphere.  This is pumkin chucking in Morton, IL.  This contest draws hundreds of entries per year from local, national and international entities.  Many universities and businesses also enter in this contest.

OPT (Other People’s Time)

Whenever you hire somebody to work for you, that is using other people’s time.  Other people’s time is useful because you can only accomplish so much by yourself.  Moreover, as long as the benefit of having that person outweighs the investment, it makes sense.  Additionally, you can hire as many as you need to keep up with workload.

This is the fundamental OPX.

OPE (Other People’s Efforts)

You use other people’s effort when the task is beyond your capabilities in either a physical sense, knowledge or mental capability.  Using somebody who has more talent than you in a certain area is smart.  We can’t all go to school for everything, or be the most impressive physical speciman.

OPM (Other People’s Money)

When you put your money in a bank, what do they do with it?  They rent it out to others for more, right?  That’s called arbitrage.  Well, if we knew how to do that, we would do the same thing in a heart beat right?  Well, most of you can do the same thing and should.

OPI (Other People’s Ideas)

Bill Gates is the quintassential master of using other people’s ideas.  Microsoft did not invent one piece of software or hardware that they are selling.  They take other people’s ideas and improve on them to make them better or marketable.

IBM hires people that their only job is to think and come up with ideas that they can use for marketing.  They usually lead the field in patents every year.  Then, they make money by licensing that IDEA to others.  Their licensing revenue is one of the top ten in the world year in and year out.  They know how to use other people’s ideas.

OPA (Other People’s Authority)

Well, I have to admit, I do a good job here.  But, you can too.  I continuously use, Jim Rohn, Brian Tracy, Jeff Olson, Dave Sherwin, Dave Hall and others who have a lot of authority in a particular area and reference them for the authority I lack.

You have people that you network, work or know of who have authority in a particular area that you can use to gain credibility for certain product or service that you wish to sell.  This is also sometimes referred to as third party validation.  Magazines, D&B, Consumer Reports, Wall Street Journal are all examples of authority in some form.  Use these third party sources to create authority for your presentations.

All of these are forms of leverage that you can use to create a sense of authority around you.

You don’t have to be the best.  But, you should know how to reference the best.

Hey, I really want some more examples of leverage.  Leave me a comment on other areas of OPX and beyond.
