Many people make resolutions at the begining of the year. The resolution to “become thin” or “get Healthy” is probably the most common. Close to those two are the resolutions to “make more money” or “get wealthy”.

All of these are GOOD resolutions. The problem with them is to a large extent they will become March fodder. There are many reasons for this:

  • You just forget.
  • Life gets in the way.
  • Some emergency happens.
  • No support.

The list can go on for days.  What can’t go on for days is the realization that another year has passed and resolutions again have failed.

Here are 8 good ways to ensure that resolutions are kept.  We will discuss them further later in the text:

  • Don’t make a resolution.  Set attainable goals.
  • Find a person that WILL hold you accountable, a workout partner.
  • Make a serious investment in your goal set.
  • Block specific time on your calendar to address it.
  • Immerse yourself in the industry that surrounds that goal.
  • Make a commitment to delay your gratification.
  • Change your thinking toward the goal.  Think about how you love the result AND the work that produces it.
  • Reward yourself for the attainment of all minor and major milestones.

Each of these steps is critical to ensuring that you reach the dreams that you have for yourself.  Let’s work through these points and expound on each as we go.

First, it is time for all of us to stop making resolutions and become resolute.  If it isn’t written down, it isn’t a resolution or goal.  So, write it down.  There are som killer helps in writing your goals at the Goal Post.  Set an attainable set of goals that you can reach and measure.  Ingrain this in your soul.  Setting goals, NOT resolutions, should become a lifestyle.

Next, find someone who will hold you accountable to what you have written down.  Here is the real key to this whole thing.  Find someone who won’t patronize you.  You don’t need a patsy here.  It is key that you find someone who will push you and inspire you to be your very best.  Life is too short for you to waste your time here with someone who will “let” you do whatever you want.  Get someone close to you who will be your drill sergeant and cheer leader.

This is the one where most people suffer, investment.  Spend enough money that it hurts.  You have to make a financial commitment to most goals.  If you need coaching, training or whatever, do it!!!  If you are serious about your goals and your resolutions, you have to be serious with your wallet.  The money will come back in plenty of time.  You only have one lifetime to do anything.  Commit to excellence in all things.

Block out time to work on the achievement.  Now, when I say block out time, I do not mean set aside some time if it exists.  I mean BLOCK the time.  For you to succeed at this thing you are attempting, you need to create space around it.  Time that you can think, plan, do and review all aspects of the thing you are attempting to accomplish.  Time is your MOST important asset.  Do not forget that for you to be helpful to others, you must spend time on yourself and with yourself to become a useful tool to those whom you wish to aid.

Take a look at those around you that have what you want.  Who has the body you want?  Who has the success you want?  Who can teach you the nutritional facts that you need?  Who are the experts and gurus in the industry you are interested in?  What materials are available to read, watch or use?  After you have answered these questions, get involved in the industry.  Immerse yourself in the knowledge of that industry.  Don’t be afraid to ask questions or send e-mails to find out what you need to find out.

Many people attempt to keep up with their neighbors during their work toward their goals.  If you want to really achieve what you set out to attain, you must delay that gratification.  The keep up with the Jones mentality will hinder or block your ability to reach your dreams.  If you have a neighbor who boasts or brags about what they have, avoid them.  It is a form of bullying.  Realize that and move on.  March to YOUR drum, not theirs.  Understand that, that will power that you use during that contact will payoff for many years to come instead of a temporary gratification that is just not worth it.

What is worth it is to think differently about your goal.  Think about how you love the result.  Think about how good the work will feel after you have reached the goal.  Think about every hard thing you have done and accomplished in your life and how it was worth it, (the work that is).  Think about the hardest thing you have ever done.  What did you learn from that experience?  In this world of the 4 hour work week and entitlement all over the place, how tough can it be to stand out, be better or just squash the competition?  Just think differently.

Different people reward themselves differently, so you will have to come up with what is a reward.  A night out with the family;  A night out alone;  A new bike;  A new car;  A ski trip;  A sail boat;  A yacht;  A simple trip to the mountains;  These are all rewards that can be compelling for you.  When you have reached one of these milestones, reward yourself.  This will keep your motivation high and enable you to keep on keeping on, on your road to becoming a resolution buster.

Finally, none of this can be accomplished if you don’t chooose to be a doer.  Choose now to change your life and become who you really can become.  Never stop believing in you.  If you don’t there are only so many who ever will.  There will be times in this process that you will NEED to be selfish.  Cherish the right to do so in order to become what you need to become for yourself and others.  I know that I can count on each of you to become resolution busters this year and make this year your best year ever.

Safety Glasses

Safety Glasses

Some barriers are used for protection.  Safety glasses protect you from flying debris, whatever you are doing.  They help keep a vital organ protected.  They are a barrier.  Removal of this barrier at an improper moment can mean the loss of sight.  Proper vision in your life is just as important.  However, there is a barrier you may want to remove from sight.

Many people write down goals.  However their goals are too general to ever really reach.  Here is an example:

I would like a nice home, in a nice neighborhood with nice friends etc.

These are NOT goals.  They are nice thoughts and dreams.  To properly set goals, you need significant definition.  This is a fundamental barrier to success for some.

Let me give you a visual.  Many people set physical goals.  One of them it to get defined.  Here are two examples of defined:

#1.  This man (Good Definition) has definition….the right definition.

#2.  This man (Bad Definition) has definition….the wrong definition, but definition nevertheless.

Defined Abs (Bad)

Defined Abs (Bad)

Defined Abs (Good)

Defined Abs (Good)

They both are defined.  They both have six-pack abs.  However, their definition is completely different.  You have to be specific!

Would you like your doctor working on a heart issue with crystal clear x-rays or fuzzy x-rays.  You wouldn’t dream of letting them just wander around your body.

What would you prefer your wedding pictures to be, defined or fuzzy.  It sounds silly to allow these things to happen.  However, we have a tendency to do this with our life and our time.  You shouldn’t allow a lack of definition in any of these areas.  Neither should you allow yourself to wander around life with non-specific goals.

Your detail in your goal set will largely determine if you achieve your dreams.  If they are just general items and not highly specific, you are really NOT interested in achieving them, they are just nice thoughts.

Many people have nice thoughts.  But, they will never achieve anything.  If you want to define your dreams, then they must have intracate details to them.  If you want a nice home, what does that mean to you, exactly?

Does the home have an entryway?  How many square feet?  How many bedrooms?  What is the cost of the home?  Where is the home?  Does the home have granite counters, stone counters or formica?  Does each room have its own bathroom?  How tall are the ceilings?  Is it on the mountain or on the beach?  Doea it have a sprinkler system?  Is it on a golf course?

The point of this is intricate detail breeds thoughts in your mind that will help you accomplish your goals.  That detail causes an effect on the human mind.  It creates a need to achieve them.  It enables the creativity to flow and motivate the mind to create the necessary actions.

Get specific.  Drive your goals home in your mind first and the unique material you were born with will strive to reach those defined objective.

Boundaries are becoming more and more important in this age of constant messages.  Productivity is becoming secondary to information, we are being “friended” by people in countries far and wide, our families are being scattered in  this global economy and we are just bombarded on a daily basis with do this or get that.  It is critical that we set boundaries for ourselves, our business and our families.

It has been said that you are the equivalent of the five people you surround yourself with.  If that is true then you need to set boundaries for each of the 7 Key Areas of your life and only let in your intimate circle those who have the characteristics that you desire.

Some try to attribute this only to your financial life.  However, you must separate and create those boundaries in each of the seven areas to maximize whom you want to become as a person.

Spiritual Boundaries
is the first area that we will address here.  What is your belief system and who possesses the qualities that you most admire and desire.  What ever your beliefs are there are those people that you could emulate and participate with.  Find those key individuals, causes and organizations.

Social Boundaries are the area that most people relate to when thinking of boundaries.  Wether it concerns friends, family or co-workers.  There are those whom you wish to be with and those that you should avoid.  Based on your value set and goals, you can define the group and or individual relationships that you should continue.

Mental Boundaries there are certainly things that you should allow into your mind and those that you should not.  Based on your goals, you must define and stick to what you allow into your mind.  There are plenty of distractions that are fun and temporarily fulfilling.  However, there are only a few that are profitable and good.  Choose well what you allow your mind to be a part of.

Emotional Boundaries are those boundaries that you set in place to protect yourself from you (the destructive side) and others who do not have your best interest in mind.  Emotional barriers allow you to control the process of protecting your “heart”.

Physical Boundaries are those that have been established by culture.  People who talk too close, talk too much or enter your personal space are rejected socially because of their lack of knowledge with regard to physical boundaries.  There are criminals who lack the discipline to stay away from other’s posessions or persons.  Those are all physical boundaries that are handled by laws.

Financial Boundaries are those that are set personally.  Most people relate those to a personal or family budget.  Setting those financial barriers allows each individual or group to maintain a certain standard.  Some choose to live above and some choose to live below those standards.  Whatever your standards are, you must have those preset boundaries to help you achieve the things you set out to achieve.  Another financial barriers is your work ethic or focus.  With it you can determine a life of poverty or a life of opportunity.

Material Boundaries refer to those things that you acquire, how you live or how you separate yourself from those around you physically.  Many people fence themselves in and shut out the outside world.  Others create boundaries with toys.  Other still create boundaries with private subdivisions.  This seperation can be positive, but can also take on a darker negative characteristic as well.

These 7 Key Areas of boundaries constitute the major cause of lack of focus and mental depression.  Allowing yourself to be affected by those around you that although externally may act or say that they have your best interest at heart, but do not understand the underlying causes or pain can create a long term negative affect on you and your family.

Create your boundaries and maintain them by understanding the areas and what you can do to define them and stick to them.  Boundaries are a positive set of choices you make to control your own destiny.  Choose today to be a boundary marshall.  Marshall in a new area of self control and discipline.

There has been such an overwhelming response to the Barriers to Success series, I have done some research on what would be some of the best subjects.  Setting your personal, business boundaries has been requested by a number of individuals.

I believe we will discover together how to minimize our distractions, increase our focus and ultimately maximize our incomes.  The other beautiful thing that should come from this is a laser focus on the areas of your life where boundaries are being crossed, some without you and I even knowing them.

I also want to take this time to thank all of you that read this blog.  It has made a better writer out of me and re-kindled the desire to improve both personally and professionally.  As most of you recognize, when you are the “teacher”, normally you have to learn the material twice as good to present it well.  In that process, you can’t help but become better.

The new series will start this week.  I encourage each of you to comment freely and often on this series as I know YOU WILL.

There will be obvious entries as well as some controversy.  Which of those two will encourage you to participate in the discussion, I am unsure.  What will motivate you to success, I AM sure.  YOU!!

I look forward to you earning all the success you deserve in 2009 and beyond!

The communication barrier is a subtle deadly barrier that kills deals, relationships and makes religious zealots murders.  Make sure you are careful of your barriers.

One of the best selling books in recent history has been Rick Warren’s “Purpose Driven Life”.  The reason that it is selling so well is that so few have developed a purpose for their life.

They are drifting from event to event with no passion or direction.  It is for this reason that the book was written and why so many have latched on to its precepts.  Rick is a pastor of a large church is southern California.  While there is an underlying spiritual nature to any really purpose driven life, it can be any spiritual focus that brings it forward.

Bringing purpose into your life is an art form and should help you define what you really want.  The starting place for this is to realize the symptoms prior to us moving to the solution.

So, what are the results of a lack of purpose?  They are far reaching and can actually result in the end in physiological manifestations.

First, the Mental Cost of a lack of purpose is confusion and an inability to focus on tasks because they lack the inner meaning that pushes you onward regardless of what barriers you encounter.  The confusion creates a lack of productivity.  The inability to focus creates a frustration that can lead to other symptoms we discuss later in the article.

The Financial Cost of a lack of purpose are bad as well.  If you are just going through the motions, your employer or supervisor will be able to read the signs and realize that you are just collecting a check.  This leads to fewer promotions and less money.  The market can tell when you lack purpose and passion.

The Spiritual Cost can be the most costly.  When you perceive in yourself a lack of purpose or faith in your direction or spiritual focus, this can cause Chaos.  Chaos occurs when you are incongruent with your core value set.  This can lead to apathy and it will ultimately lead to a lack of faith.

The Emotional Cost is the most subtle and can be devastating.  Depression is one of the first signs of this lack of purpose.  It leads to laziness, lack of energy and blaming.  It is the original cause of a lack of personal responsibility.  If you are blaming others for your lot in life instead of taking responsibility, you may be lacking purpose.

The Social Cost to a lack of purpose is also a subtle cost.  If your friends or family begin to withdraw and avoid you, you may be experiencing a lack of purpose.  This leads to isolation and can deepen any depression.

The Physiological Cost is an outward manifestation of the deeper issues that have been affecting you.  Research has shown that when mental or other problems are ongoing and continue to be ignored instead of addressed, those issues can cause a physical manifestation of those psychological issues.

Health can deteriorate as problems continue as a result of these ongoing issues.

The underlying lack of purpose can cause all of these challenges.  It is up to us to make the choices that will enable us to follow a course which we choose and are passionate about.

So, how do we do this?  Here’s one way:

First, answer these questions below and actually write the answers to those questions on a sheet of paper;

If you had $100,000,000 what would you do with your life?  If money were absolutely not issue what tasks would you perform?  Who would you desire to be with?  What industry would you most want to be involved with?
If you knew you would NOT fail, what job or career would you want?
What charities or causes would you support?

Next, ask yourself:
Are these realistic ideas that I can profit from today?
Can I feed my family and meet my needs with this path?
Do I want to do this?
Can I put my full passion behind this endeavor?

What is your purpose?  Why do you exist?  If you can answer this, you can create a life of purpose and true fulfillment whether or not money is the final answer.  Put a purpose in place and watch the results begin to flow in.  Become a doer instead of a watcher in life.

Sir Isaac Newton introduces the laws of motion.
1.  “A body continues to maintain its state of rest or of uniform motion unless acted upon by an external unbalanced force.”
2.  “A body continues to maintain its state of rest or of uniform motion unless acted upon by an external unbalanced force.”
3.  “To every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.”

Number 3 is commonly referred to as the Law of Reciprocation.  While this is a scientific law it has a basic form in the human psyche.

Reciprocation can take many forms.  It is a driver in the force of sales and marketing.  It literally engulfs our social culture with idioms like:
• What goes around comes around
• You get what you give
• Do unto others as you would have them do unto you
• You reap what you sow
• Be a good neighbor
• Pay it forward

The point is, this is a fundamental law in our society and we need to understand it and its affect in our life and business.  In fact, if someone violates this set of laws we are offended.

There are 5 areas of reciprocation that we will investigate.
• Social reciprocation
• Financial reciprocation
• Power reciprocation
• Value reciprocation
• Negative reciprocation

Social reciprocation refers to the situation where you give, compliment or offer something to someone and they then attempt to repay the debt.
• Give some positive feedback.  A simple compliment about a person can change the mood of a negotiation or sales situation.
• Give to a worthwhile cause.
• Give others a cause to hope.

Financial reciprocation refers to the idea that what value you bring to the market you will extract from the market in monetary form.

Jay Leno tells the story of when he started his career in working at a dealership.  He was not hired but started working.  When the supervisor then tried to fire him, everybody at the shop was unwilling to let the supervisor fire him because he was providing so much value.

Jim Rohn the famous philosopher says that the more value you bring to the market, the more money the market will pay for your services.
The bottom line in this form of reciprocation is that it is in direct proportion to the value the market feels that you have brought to it.

Power reciprocation is what you distribute in credits will be returned to you in like form.

Many politicians seek to form alliances and joint ventures that will lead to reciprocation in the form of power.  C level executives in many companies seek to create similar alliances to aid in the ability to compete in the marketplace as well.

Power reciprocation is probably the most under-rated but critical tool in the ability of companies, politicians and countries to move their particular agendas forward.

Value reciprocation is the unique phenomenon whereby people tend to reciprocate to a large extent a larger value than was initially given.

Through the ages a simple compliment is reciprocated with gushing praise.  Value reciprocation is also used extensively in the sales process.  Consider how often you are offered a soda or coffee in a situation where you are purchasing an immensely expensive item, like a car or a house.

Overall, value reciprocation is a powerful tool that you can use in the process of your business.

However, value reciprocation can be used in social settings as well.

Negative reciprocation can be just as powerful.  Although infinitely less desirable, negative reciprocation can occur when you engage in an activity on purpose or by accident that creates a negative outcome or feelings.

Reciprocity initially takes its form first in a psychological debt.  Where the debtor feels as though they must repay the debt.  Sometimes the debtor will go to great lengths to repay and may repay in a greater form than was originally given.  However, if the debt isn’t repaid in a socially acceptable timeframe, the debtor may experience a physiological form of reciprocation anxiety.  Where he or she may even experience shaking or sweating until the debt is repaid or forgiven.

In the sales industry reciprocation is used commonly.  Water, soda or coffee offered in a sales situation is a fundamental technique used.  However, pens and other advertising specialties are used all the time.

The major thing to keep in mind is that all of these techniques can be mastered and manipulated to your advantage.  Learn how to best use reciprocation in your industry to perfect your earnings and leverage.
