For Those Who Wish to Improve

Well, Black Friday is here.  The next 25 days should be insane.  Parties, concerts, friends, family and so much retail hype that you could float a battleship on the sheer volume of it.

This time of year, the happiest time of year, the best time to be with family and friends, all comes with a price.  Financially, emotionally and physically this time of year comes with a price.  Are you willing to pay what is necessary to remain successful during this time of year?

The holidays can refocus or reshift your priorities quick.

So, to start off the season right, a little mini-concert for you.  Straight No Chaser – A concert group from the University of Indiana has a song prepared for us that you must hear.

Wow!  That was awesome.  Now off to work you go.  Have a Great Holiday Season!!!

Rob Wheeler.

We live in a wonderful country with opportunities that don’t exit in most parts of the world.  We have the privilage to live our lives and pursue our dreams unfettered by others.  We can aspire and achieve as we please.
Our country has come from humble beginings.
A glimpse of 100 years ago, in 1908:
  • we expected we would live to about 47 years old,
  • the model “T” was first produced and there were only 8,000 cars on the roads (144 miles of paved roads), maximum speed was 10 mph,
  • there was only 90 million of us,
  • the Wright brothers were just becoming known,
  • only 14% of homes had a bathtub, 8% had a telephone,
  • the average wage was 22 cents/hour
  • 95% of births happened in the home
  • the American flag had just 45 stars
  • 30 people lived in Las Vegas, NV
  • only 6% of the population graduated high school
  • there were only 236 murders reported in the entire country
  • pharmacists said,”Heroin clears the complexion, gives buoyancy to the mind, regulates the stomach and bowels, and is, in fact, a perfect guardian of health.”
  • eighteen percent of households had at least one full-time servant or domestic help.

We’ve come a long way.  It has been an amazing century.  I’m pleased to be on the earth at this time.

I invite you to share with those less fortunate by giving to our local food bank.
It would be my wish that you have a wonderful Thanksgiving surrounded by family and loved ones.
Thanks to all who have helped make this a prosperous you for someone else!

Many look back in their lives and wonder what would have been or could have been had they chose a different path.  While this is experienced by us all at some point, the more appropriate question is what path will you take from here forward.

The question of paths and regrets will be argued for eternity.  Those who are successful understand that the past is just that.  There is NOTHING you can do about what is behind.  However, there is EVERYTHING you can do about what lies ahead.

Those who cannot forget the regrets of the past and move forward to that which you are destined and called to become risk the possibility of a lifetime spent in sorrow.  Those who move past their challenges of life past and press on to the challenges that lie ahead bring hope to their families and certain success in the attempt in general.  Success is not a destination, but rather a path on which those who have made the decision tread.

Success is not a monetary, social or material reward, but an attitude that consists of determination and the will to press on regardless of the barriers that are placed in your path.  If you persist and develop that inner strength, it WILL make all the difference.

Robert Frost perfected this struggle with paths to be taken:

The Road Not Taken
TWO roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth; 5
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that, the passing there
Had worn them really about the same, 10
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I marked the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way
I doubted if I should ever come back. 15
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I,
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference. 20

I surmise many will read this and decide that they are just fine in their job or chosen career.  However, there will be a few who decide it is time to take the road that is a little less worn, a little less traveled, a little harder to trek.  They will experience the joy of the trip, the respect they earn at the end of the road, not the temporary respect earned by money, but the long lasting respect earned from a life of integrity and a life built with hard work, determination and giving.

Robert Frost understood that his life of writing would not gain the respect that others get from the money they earn during their lifetime.  He chose to make a difference for many generations to come!

I suppose I will never know how many people truly understand what Robert was meaning.  But, for me what matters is that I pass on to as many as I can his message of hope and endurance to those with whom I come in contact with.

If you are but one of those.  Leave me a comment and let me know how you read Robert.

The Barriers to Success

I have had the opportunity to spend time this week with my boys as Linda (my wife) has been traveling.  It has been flat out awesome!  I can’t imagine not having any of them around me.  It led me to think of why I work so hard.

Many of us accept less than we should because we don’t think we deserve more.  I can’t imagine less than being able to spend time with my boys while Linda is traveling.  I am so blessed to be able to be able to take the time necessary to spend with them.

Although I am looking forward to the time when Linda returns I am thankful for the time I get to spend with the boys.

I can’t wait to run around some more and “rough” them up.

John did 38 pushups in a row.  Jordan may be able to, but he wouldn’t do it.  Jacob roughed up Perry (A great friend and partner) and his wife Lauri and us all watched Jack and Jacob act like spiders until Jack (Perry and Lauri’s 1st) crashed for the evening.  We went home and watched Bambi.  It was awesome.

I am blessed.  I wish all the blessings that you are willing to earn for your family.  And the intelligence to understand how important they are.

I remember how little time I spent with Jordan and John early in my career.  Oh, how much I missed.

Make sure you don’t “miss” too many memories with your family.

Many people who are bloggers have asked me what can I do to improve my traffic.  Well, that is never an easy answer and it often is a question that brings more consternation than comfort.  Mostly because the truth is that most traffic is built from solid content and consistent blogging.

That said there are a few services that I truly think that can make a difference.

I have gathered a few of them in the blog resources button above.

However, one really sticks out in my mind and created a lot of GREAT traffic.

Blog Explosion

Blog Explosion is a service that garantees traffic to your site and really does it.  As I was looking at my google analytics I saw that over a certain period of time, Blog Explosion provided over 100 visitors to my site.

Wow!  What did they get in return?  Nothing.  This is a service that performs.

Check it out.

PUT YOUR CAR KEYS BESIDE YOUR BED AT NIGHT

Tell your spouse, your children, your neighbors, your parents your Dr’s office, the check-out girl at the market, everyone you run across.

Put your car keys beside your bed at night. If you hear a noise outside your home or someone trying to get in your house, just press the panic button for your car. The alarm will be set off, and the horn will continue to sound until either you turn it off or the car battery dies.

This tip came from a neighborhood watch coordinator. Next time you come home for the night and you start to put your keys away, think of this:

It’s a security alarm system that you probably already have and requires no installation. Test it. It will go off from most everywhere inside your house and will keep honking until your battery runs down or until you reset it with the button on the key fob chain. It works if you park in your driveway or garage If your car alarm goes off when someone is trying to break into your house, odds are the burglar rapist won’t stick around… After a few seconds all the neighbors will be looking out their windows to see who is out there and sure enough the criminal won’t want that. And remember to carry your keys while walking to your car in a parking lot. The alarm can work the same way there ….. This is something that should really be shared with everyone.  Maybe it could save a life or a sexual abuse crime.

P.S. I am sending this to everyone I know because I think it is fantastic. Would also be useful for any emergency, such as a heart attack, where you can’t reach a phone.

I suggest to my elderly friends that they carry their car keys with them in case they fall outside and nobody hears.  They can activate the car alarm and then someone will know there’s a problem.
To your Safety…

Take This Test

This is very thoughtful .

Scroll thru this slowly and read it carefully to receive and enjoy full effect.

See if it is as much “THE TRUTH” for you as it was for Charles Schultz.
The following is the philosophy of Charles Schultz, the creator of the “Peanuts” comic strip.
Don’t actually answer the questions.
Just read the e-mail straight through, and you’ll get the point.
1. Name the five wealthiest people in the world.
2. Name the last five Heisman trophy winners.
3. Name the last five winners of the Miss America pageant.
4. Name ten people who have won the Nobel or Pulitzer Prize.
5. Name the last half dozen Academy Award winners for best actor and actress.
6. Name the last decade’s worth of World Series winners.

How did you do?

The point is, none of us remember the headliners of yesterday. These are no second-rate achievers. They are the best in their fields. But the applause dies.. Awards tarnish. Achievements are forgotten.

Accolades and certificates are buried with their owners.

Here’s another quiz. See how you do on this one:

1. List a few teachers who aided your journey through school. 2. Name three friends who have helped you through a difficult time. 3. Name five people who have taught you something worthwhile. 4. Think of a few people who have made you feel appreciated and special!!

5. Think of five people you enjoy spending time with.

Easier?

The lesson: The people who make a difference in your life are not the ones with the most credentials..the most money…or the most awards. They simply are the ones who care the most.

Pass this on to those people who have made a difference in your life, like I did.  ‘Don’t worry about the world coming to an end today.  It’s already tomorrow in Australia !’

”Be Yourself. Everyone Else Is Taken!’

In running the four minute mile was the holy grail.  I was a barrier that no one had broken.  A long legged British man named Roger Bannister had been trying with other individuals to break that barrier.  His achievement is written in the history books

What most people don’t know is that he only held the record 49 days.  However, you don’t ever hear who held the over 4 minute record that he broke and the under 4 minute record breaker who broke his record 49 days later.  And, I am not going to tell you those now.  Only the person who achieved it first is recognized.  Many barriers in your life will be “firsts”.  Are you ready to be the one who breaks through those tough barriers?

Many people suffer in their careers as a result of a lack of goals.  They have never developed a solid goal strategy.  Their lack of planning and preparation for the inevitable trials and challenges that they face can stop them from achieving greatness.

To properly finish the race you have to begin with the end in mind according to Stephen Covey.  Well, that means you have to have some sort of goals manager.  Whether that tool is paper or electronic is up to you.

Success goals are important to give you a “map” to success.  Let me give you an example:

Suppose you were given the task to travel from Miami to Seattle.  Here are your stipulations:

  • You must travel alone.
  • You must travel in a car.
  • You may not use a map.
  • You must travel at night.
  • You may use no lights.

Those are some tough circumstances.  If you have traveled enough, you may know enough of the roads to get there.  However, there may be some dings in the car or you may not even get there.  On the other hand, what if you were given the same circumstances, but, you can have lights and a map?

Here is the fundamental difference.  With a map and lights, even though you can only see about 100 to 200 feet in front of you, you will be able to travel the entire distance safely (unless you drive on Utah Highways :  ) ).

In our personal and business life we largely replicate that same situation.  We can see 100 to 200 feet in front of us and we are trudging forward.  If we do not have a map (goals), we will be driven by outside influences in our life.

Our success in any of the 7 Areas of Life is going to be largely determined by the goals we set and the team we build around us.  There is a simple way to write out your goals at a link here.

Examples Goals

Use this system of writing goals to help you begin to achieve the things that you want to achieve in life.  I love what Jim Rohn says, “Work full time on your job.  Work part time on your fortune!”

Those whom you want to follow you will not follow if they perceive a lack of leadership.

Begin today to build your fortune.  You CAN blow past any barriers, just like Roger Bannister!
